Genesis and the Decline of Christianity in America

The Christian culture in the United States is not what it used to be. We are becoming less Christian as a nation every day. Our children quit going to church after high school, the Ten Commandments have been taken down, and they have taken prayer out of the schools. Abortion has been legalized and over 50 million innocent children have been murdered as a result in the United States alone.

Hitler killed 6 million Jews in World War 2. Over 50 million children have been murdered in the United States alone since abortion was legalized. This truly could be called an American Holocaust. All of this has happened in what used to be a Christian nation.

All of these issues are not the problems that have resulted in the decline of American Christianity. They are the symptoms of the problem that we have today. The problem is that Christians today are not taking God’s Word as their ultimate authority on all matters. Instead they are letting man’s opinion affect the decisions they make and how they live their lives.

It all goes back to the book of Genesis. In Genesis God tells us that He made everything in six days and rested on the seventh day. This happened about 6,000 years ago, not billions. Today people are taking man’s opinion as truth instead of taking God’s Word as truth. The History Channel and the Discovery Channel has more influence over a person’s beliefs today than the Bible does.

This should not be the case. Prior to about 200 years ago most people believed that the earth was about 6,000 years old according to the Bible. Then some scientists came along and began to popularize the idea of the earth being millions and billions of years old. Some of the Christians, not taking God’s word as truth, began to accept this old earth idea and began compromising the clear teachings of their Bibles. They came up with ideas such as the Gap Theory, the Day Age Theory, and Theistic Evolution.

They argue, even today, that a day in Genesis is not a literal 24 hour day. They say that each day could be a long period of time. Again they are not taking God’s Word as truth and are letting outside ideas influence their thinking.

Here we have Exodus 20:11:

“For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.”

God could not have made it any clearer than this. Furthermore, He wrote this on a rock with His finger! Taking God’s word as truth, we see that the Genesis account of Creation should be taken literally. It is only when we try to make man’s opinions fit into the Bible that there arises problems and compromise.

Most people in our culture today believe in the ‘millions of years’ idea. It is in the textbooks and it is all over the television. They believe that the universe came into existence 15-20 billion years ago and earth came into existence about 4.6 billion years ago. All of this supposedly happened long before man came onto the scene. Well, let’s see what the Bible says:

“But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.” Mark 10:6

God is telling us here that He made Adam and Eve at the beginning of the Creation. Taking God’s word as truth we see that He didn’t create the universe and the earth billions of years before He created man.

We need to take the Book of Genesis as literal history: just like Jesus did.

“For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?” John 5:46-47

Jesus is telling us here that if we do not believe the writings of Moses, such as the book of Genesis, you would not believe His words.

This is exactly what is happening in our culture today. People are not taking the book of Genesis as literal truth. They do not believe the history in the book of Genesis and they doubt the clear teachings of their bibles. Since they doubt the history in Genesis, there is no reason they shouldn’t doubt the spiritual and moral truths that are also in the bible.

The key to all of this is what Jesus said in John 3:12:

“If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you of heavenly things?”

If we do not believe the earthly things that are spoken of in the book of Genesis, such as the creation, then there is no reason for anyone to believe the spiritual and heavenly things that are found throughout the rest of the Bible.
